The exhibit showcases farmers through large-format photographic portraits by Macaulay Lerman. Sharrow’s metaphor of the “wheel,” a central theme of the exhibit, is conveyed in the form of biographies and audio interview excerpts that complement the portraits of more than a dozen current and former farmers, many of whom trace some aspect of their agricultural trajectory to the Cox’s mentorship and generosity. The ethnographic interviews conducted by Sharrow and Kolovos, and the resulting biographical and audio content in the exhibit, share the experience and insights of the farmers in their own words. The large-scale photo portraits—nearly 4 by 3 feet—were created with a similar intention in mind. Furlani Standing-She figures In this grouping of standing wood figures, I wish to honor the female. My vision for this series began with a desire to deepen my woodcarving know-how through life-size female sculptures. What followed, in time, were larger questions I had never asked and grew eager to explore: "What is the embodiment of female energy?" and "How is it revealed in sculptural form?” These figures, in part, came to fruition from my experience as a woman: my dreams and desires and darkness. Each section, of each figure, was brought to light incrementally after a period of unknowing gestation. Their life-size scale seemed to usher in a new found awareness of my process as a sculptor: How I search for and discover and clarify my forms internally through bodily instincts. And how I am fueled, in equal parts, by my strength and vulnerability; my fire and tenderness and uncertainties. I have envisioned seven Standing-She figures for this series, a nod to the ancient priestess "Council of Seven" of prehistoric Goddess culture, where we began, with honor and reverence to the female form. These sculptures are underpinned by the findings I have gleaned from my research of Goddess culture. I'm so grateful to these scholars, my surrogate sisters, for their writings that have helped me to embolden my vision. Carolyn Shattuck The artist is known as a painter and printmaker. Shattuck also has a national reputation as a book artist. In her wildly colored, abstract-plus-figurative art, Shattuck’s aim is to show connections and contrasts between the energy in the water and the energy on the street, reflecting the blend of lifestyles she experiences every year during her four months near Key West. The collages depict two opposing aspects of the area: the loud, boisterous life of the ethnic neighborhoods with music, dancing, motorcycles versus the serenity of life out in a kayak viewing the denizens of the deep. The natural world has its own super-abundance: shore birds – plovers and sandpipers, horseshoe crabs, and other wildlife. Shattuck documents this barrage of disparate information. Shattuck enjoys using a variety of seductive materials in these new collages: pieces of artist-created print patterns, Japanese papers to effect transparencies, and prints of her own delicate drypoint sketches, to mention a few. The colors turn out to be blue, green and red arguably in this order. I put together about 15 found object pieces including those pictured and decided to use only these three colors on all of the pieces. I tried each color as the predominant one but this particular red won easily for each piece. The red compliments the dynamic lines of the pieces which blue and green just don’t do.
